Shelton Leadership Center Welcomes Four New Board of Advisors Members
The Shelton Leadership Center proudly announces the appointment of four new members to its Board of Advisors (BOA). Their first BOA meeting took place in April, where they were formally greeted and welcomed by the board.
New BOA members include Tami Polge, Bobby Purcell, Andy Walsh and Dereck Whittenburg, whose expertise spans education and curriculum consultation, athletics administration and management, philanthropy and fundraising, civic engagement, legal counsel and more.
“We are thrilled to welcome these four outstanding leaders to the Shelton Center’s Board of Advisors group. Their remarkable expertise complements the board greatly as we advance the mission of the Shelton Leadership Center. We look forward to working with Tami, Bobby, Andy and Dereck and seeing all that they will bring to the group,” DeLisa Alexander, current chair of the BOA, said. “I also want to extend appreciation to Joe Anglim and Woody Sessoms, who completed their service on the Board of Advisors this past spring. Joe’s and Woody’s unwavering passion and commitment have been nothing short of transformative for the Center. Through their support in strategic planning, their service on key planning committees, and their demonstration of what it means to be a values-based leader, they have made an incredible impact on the Shelton community.”
The BOA meets each fall and spring semester to provide updates and strategic guidance for the Shelton Center’s initiatives, executive leadership, and sustainable funding. Current board members come from various industries and share a passion for promoting values-based leadership in the next generation. The full BOA roster can be found here.

Read Tami’s Bio
Tami Polge has served as an educator, student leadership coach, curriculum designer, and Director of Service Learning, with a focus on student-centered, experiential learning. She holds a B.A. in Education and History and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from UNC-Chapel Hill. She recently helped Cary Academy launch its Leadership Academy program and coaches students with Success Story.
Through serving on the boards of Cary Academy, The Raleigh School, Theatre Raleigh, and Schoolhouse of Wonder, Tami has supported strategic planning, development, governance, community engagement, and storytelling. Her volunteer work has also included designing and leading student leadership workshops and conferences with Athena of the Triangle, The Carying Place, and the Bald Head Island Conservancy.
Tami is grateful for the opportunity to support the Shelton Leadership Center’s mission to develop the next generation of values-driven leaders.
Read Bobby’s Bio
Purcell joined the NC State athletics department in 1981, serving in many capacities including assistant football coach, recruiting coordinator and executive director of the Wolfpack Club. He oversaw construction of the Wendell H. Murphy Football Center and the TowneBank Center as well as spearheaded numerous successful financial campaigns, like the funding of nearly 400 student-athlete scholarships annually.
Read Andy’s Bio
Andy Walsh focuses his law practice on public finance. He is part of a team of attorneys who handle financings for governmental, healthcare, higher education, and charitable organizations.
Andy earned his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the North Carolina Banking Institute Journal and the Transactional and Corporate Law Association.
Prior to law school, Andy served as a government relations assistant for a Raleigh law firm and as a legislative assistant for the NC State University Office of Federal Affairs. He earned his undergraduate degree from NC State, where he served as student body president and on the board of trustees. He also played club hockey at NC State and UNC.
Outside of work, Andy enjoys exercising, skiing, spending time with his dogs, and watching the NHL, NFL, and college sports.
Read Dereck’s Bio
Dereck Whittenburg, a member of NC State’s 1983 national championship men’s basketball team, began his role of Associate Athletic Director for Community Relations and Student Support in October 2015.
Whittenburg worked with the Wolfpack men’s basketball program as Senior Assistant to the Head Coach/Director of Player Development for two years prior to accepting his current position.
In his current role, he develops and promotes programming aimed to benefit current and former student-athletes, while also working to cultivate relationships with local and regional businesses regarding future employment opportunities for Wolfpack graduates.
Additionally, Whittenburg’s role includes speaking at and hosting events for the athletic department and other affiliated organizations, as well as supporting on-campus recruiting initiatives for each of the Wolfpack’s 23 varsity programs.
Whittenburg advocates for former student-athletes to return to NC State to complete their respective degrees and will serve on NC State’s professional sports panel.
