Barbara Mulkey to Lead Center

The General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center, housed at NC State University, is pleased to welcome Barbara H. Mulkey, PE, who has been selected as its new Director following a nationwide search.

Barbara’s background leading a company and her commitment to enhancing education in NC uniquely positions her to assume the role of Director. Barbara is known for her role as the Founder of Mulkey Engineers & Consultants in 1993, from which she retired a year ago. During her roles as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board, Barbara provided the leadership under which Mulkey grew from a one-person home office to a Top 500 engineering company nationally.

Barbara has been an active supporter of her profession through numerous leadership roles such as President and National Director of the American Council of Engineering Companies of NC, and her activities with the American Society of Civil Engineers, which named her a Fellow.

Her passion for education and improving the quality of life throughout North Carolina is evident through her many years of service on boards such as the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science, the NC State Engineering Foundation, and the NC State Board of Trustees, which she chaired for two years. Currently, Barbara serves on the Research Triangle Foundation Board, and chairs the Triangle Universities Center for Academic Studies (TUCASI).

Responding to the question of why she chose this particular position at this time, Barbara replied, “I didn’t foresee beginning another career. But when this opportunity came along, I saw that this was an opportunity to work full time with an organization whose mission is so similar to my own personal mission. Working under the leadership of a man like General Shelton to promote values-based leadership throughout the University and the world, with the incredible resources of NC State faculty and staff, is not something I could pass up. I wake up each morning energized and excited about working with my colleagues in a culture of excellence and ethics.”

Barbara’s immediate goals will be to update the long range plan for the Center and to enhance the marketing and branding strategy to make a larger audience aware of the many programs offered by the Center, which include summer leadership camps for high schoolers, internships and scholarship for college students, and courses and other curricula for students and organization a management an leadership.

About the Challenge
The Shelton Challenge is a six-day residential experience to help students expand their knowledge and skills of what it takes to be a leader. Students will participate in activities that will help them have a greater understanding for: Personal Leadership Assessment and Interpersonal Dynamics; Role of Values and Ethics in Leadership; Leadership Traits and Approaches; Teambuilding and Empowering Others; Civic and Social Responsibility; and Goal Setting.  Read More…

Leadership: Cross Disciplinary Perspectives (24SLC)


The Leadership: Cross Disciplinary Perspectives minor is a 15-hour minor that is designed for students who seek to gain greater knowledge and understanding of leadership perspectives from a variety of academic fields of study. The coursework is composed of courses grounded in theory, inquiry, and application. The student has the opportunity to select the specific courses which best fulfill his/her needs while maintaining a broad perspective on leadership across fields of study. The student in the minor may be preparing for graduate work or any field of study within the university.


  • Completion of a minimum of 15 required credit hours.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in the minor.
  • Students may not take minor coursework on a credit only (pass/fail) or S/U basis.
  • Four college discipline areas need to be represented toward minor requirements.
  • The program coordinator will certify the minor prior to graduation.
  • A minimum of 12 of the 15 required hours must be completed at NC State.
  • The minor must be completed no later than the final semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program. Paperwork for certification must be completed no later than during the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State.
  • Students are required to take one 3hr course, SLC 250.
  • In addition, there are three categories related to leadership that students need to select courses: Cross-Functioning Teams; Ethics/Values; and Leadership.
  • Students are required to take 3hrs from each category, totaling 12hrs toward the minor.
  • For the remaining 3hrs, students can select from any of the three categories to meet requirements of the 15 credit hour minor

Dr. Acker will certify completion of the minor. The minor must be completed no later than the semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program. Paperwork for certification should be completed no later than during the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State.
