Shelton Challenge Leadership Camps

Challenge1What is the Shelton Challenge?

The First-Year Shelton Challenge is a six-day summer experience for rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. Shelton’s five cornerstones of values-based leadership—honesty, integrity, compassion, diversity and social responsibility—are the foundations of the camp. The core curriculum focuses on Personal Leadership Assessment and Interpersonal Dynamics, Role of Values and Ethics in Leadership, Leadership Traits and Approaches, Teambuilding and Empowering Others, Social Responsibility, Public Speaking, and Goal Setting.

The First-Year Shelton Challenge seeks youth who are rising 9th through 12th graders with a 3.0 grade point average (unweighted) or higher. Students will get to experience residence hall living, eat meals at a campus dining hall, and use indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. Cost to attend the program is $700.00 for the week.

The Take II Shelton Challenge is a six-day camp for past Challenge graduates who are ready to use the foundation created from the first-year experience to build upon their own values-based leadership approach. Participants will dive deeper within the five Shelton Cornerstones to increase their level of leadership responsibility, conflict resolution, time management and decision making through hands-on project management.

The camp will also focus on the following elements of leadership: how to build a team effectively; strategic visioning and planning; trustworthiness; loyalty; diversity and inclusion; public speaking; recognition; resource development; and leadership roles. Core leadership principles are addressed in the activities to help students discover their current style of leadership and their hidden leadership abilities. Reflection is a key component for each exercise and daily review. Students are placed in leadership roles and participate in a 360° evaluation conducted by the Coach, Mentor, Trainers (CMTs). Students will get to experience residence hall living, eat meals at a campus dining hall and use indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. Cost of program is $700.00 for the week.
