Purpose

The Leadership: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives Minor is a high-impact academic experience open to all NC State undergraduate students. The Minor is designed to develop students’ knowledge, practical skills, and values-driven mindset needed to lead with integrity and make a positive impact in any field.

Why minor in Leadership?

Leadership is more than just a title – it’s a lifelong practice. In today’s complex world, strong leadership is essential across industries and communities. This minor gives you the tools to grow as a leader through intentional learning, self-reflection, and real-world application. The Leadership: Cross Disciplinary Perspectives Minor represents your commitment to these practices using an academic framework to inform your decision-making and ability to lead self and others toward a common purpose.

About the Minor

This interdisciplinary program invites students from all majors to explore leadership through a wide range of academic lenses. Coursework combines theory, inquiry, and hands-on application, giving you the flexibility to tailor the experience to your interests and career goals. Students have the opportunity to select from a variety of elective courses which best fulfill their needs while maintaining a broad perspective on leadership across fields of study.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this minor, students will be able to…

  1. Identify leadership theories across disciplines
  2. Assess how values and ethics influence leadership outcomes
  3. Compare and contrast leadership practices and strategies across disciplines
  4. Relate leadership theories and practices to real-life situations
  5. Articulate the most appropriate disciplinary decision making model in different situations
  6. Explain the differences between leadership practices and theories across disciplines

Plan Requirements

  • Completion of a minimum of 15 required credit hours.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in the minor.
  • A minimum of 12 of the 15 required hours must be completed at NC State.
  • Students may not take minor coursework on a credit only (pass/fail) or S/U basis.
  • At least three college discipline areas/ prefixes need to be represented toward minor requirements. Students are able to take different prefix areas from the same college as long as three different prefixes are present.
  • Students are required to take two 3-hour courses:
    • SLC 250: Critical and Creative Decision Making Models 
    • SLC 476: Capstone in Leadership: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives.
  • In addition to the two required courses, there are 4 categories students may select from to complete the remaining 9 elective credits. At least three of the four categories below need to be represented toward the minor.
    • Cross-Functioning Teams
    • Ethics/Values
    • Leadership Foundations
    • Leadership in Practice
  • For the minor, pre-requisites are NOT required in order to take a course. If you are unable to register for a course, please contact the program coordinator to assist you in getting registered for the desired class.
  • If a student takes SLC 450 for the maximum of six credits, the student is expected to take a course from another category, as well as the SLC 250 and SLC 476 required courses for a total of 15 credits. All other requirements remain the same to meet expectations for the minor. 
  • The minor must be completed no later than the final semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program. Paperwork for certification must be completed no later than during the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State. The program coordinator will certify the minor prior to graduation.

Courses Overview

Students must earn a minimum of 15 credit hours to graduate with the Leadership: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives Minor. The following two courses are required:

Elective Offerings (9 hours)

In addition to the two required courses, students must complete at least 9 elective credit hours toward the Leadership Minor. Elective courses are meant to introduce and/or reinforce leadership knowledge and skills in various academic disciplines and fields. Chosen electives must follow the below requirements:

  • Select between the four elective categories below, with at least three categories represented toward the minor. For example, a student could take one course in cross-functioning teams, one course in ethics/values, and one course in leadership foundations.

    • Leadership in Practice
  • At three college discipline areas/ prefixes need to be present. Students are able to take different prefix areas from the same college as long as three different prefixes are listed. For example, students could take SLC 300 (ethics/values), MIE 201 (cross-functioning teams), and AFS 344 (leadership foundations). In this example, the student has taken courses with three different prefixes and elective categories.

How to declare the minor

  1. Log into MyPack Portal
  2. Select the ‘Student Homepage’
  3. Select the ‘Planning & Enrollment’ tile
  4. From the left-hand navigation menu, select ‘CODA: Manage Majors/Minors’
  5. Select ‘Add a Minor’
  6. Complete the application as directed. The application will show your current major(s) and minor(s). Select the desired minor you intend to add. You may be asked to run a Check Eligibility report and a Degree Audit report.
