There are many ways that NC State employees can be involved in the 2024 Red Hat Shelton Challenge. For over 20 years, the Shelton Leadership Center has produced this youth leadership development program on NC State’s campus. NC State faculty and staff are invited to explore opportunities to be a part of the summer 2024 program.
The Red Hat Shelton Challenge is a six-day, residential program built on the Shelton Leadership Center’s core values – integrity, diversity, social responsibility, and compassion – and is designed to help high school students enhance their capacities to become values-based leaders. This immersive program is designed to transform potential into real-world skills through mentorship, self-reflection, and shared discovery.

Volunteer Instructor Roles
Are you passionate about developing the next generation of leaders? The Shelton Challenge is seeking volunteers to fill instructor roles. All NC State employees are welcome to apply for this opportunity. By serving as an instructor, volunteers will gain insight into the management and facilitation of leadership development curriculum, participate in hands-on leadership skill-building activities, and work with emerging leaders.
“Do you want a fun week filled with learning, leadership, and fantastic colleagues?” Coleman Simpson, a previous Shelton Challenge Instructor and current CALS Student Services Specialist and Scholarship Coordinator, said. “Then you should participate in the Shelton Challenge! This is a great way to give back to future generations, engage with others across campus, and grow yourself as a leadership and teacher.”
“Any person wanting to make a positive impact on the lives of young people will be enamored with the Shelton Leadership Challenge,” Susan Colby, a previous Shelton Challenge instructor and former UNC Staff Assembly Chair and CNR Student Services Coordinator and former Director of NC 4-H Development Fund, said. “The relationships built between Shelton volunteers and with the young people participating in the program are lifelong.”
